I originally was going to do my project on felons and how difficult it was to stay out of prison due to the struggle to find housing and jobs when you are listed as a criminal in the "system". I had a very hard time finding research on this and decided to change it, even though it is something I really care about in society because of my father. I then chose to do homelessness. This was fairly easy to find research on, as it is a problem all over the nation. I learned a lot of different methods and organizations fighting to end the struggle of poverty. Some challenges I faced were putting together my Research Proposal essay, as it is so in depth and detail-oriented, it's something I am not used to. I like to free-write. I've heard I am pretty amazing at it ;). It's so long too, I'm not used to writing about the same subject in detail over an eight page span. It is kind of terrifying to be honest. My first draft is eh, but I'm waiting for the rewrite to get some of the questions I have answered, that way I can have a spotless final draft. During my research, I learned a lot of serious facts about the homeless; most of them are women and children, more than half of the men are veterans, and most only live to be about 50 years old. That terrified me. How are we NOT helping these people? Most people don't bat an eye at someone sitting on the street corner/freeway off ramp. Why is that? Why do we, as a society, ignore what is ugliest in the world? Is it because we don't want to take responsibility or what? My next steps are to start finding a mentor. I think I'm going to use one of the Arizona Homeless organizations I researched. There is one in particular that I like, St. Vincent De Paul's, they are not Christian-based, they just help them. They help with food, clothing, shelters, and most importantly: HEALING. My next step is to start helping <3
